I saw a movie about him a few years ago and he is a fascinating, very impressive man.In the movie I saw he sits at the mixing board and breaks down Layla while discussing the recording of it.I would recommend to everyone like the gents above to seek out his story, you will be amazed at how much one person impacted music.

Must be the same movie: the one I watched was made in '05, I believe, and definitely has that scene at the mixing board. In fact, he isolates Duane's and Eric's solos at the end of "Layla".

Apparently, he also did a lot of work with rockers from the South: Lynyrd Skynyrd (a personal favorite), Marshall Tucker (I believe a top-three concert for the former PM here), The Outlaws (who doesn't like a twenty-minute "Green Grass"?), and the Brothers.

I wish Ken Burns would have done 20 hours on him instead of some of his other choices.

"Screw the "Dos Equis" guy! Tom Dowd is the world's most interesting man!"

Love that Youtube comment.
